Holding periodic refresher or continuation training is essential to update, correct or enhance skills; and forms part of Project Masam’s life-saving work in liberated areas in Yemen.

Explaining the need for refresher training courses, Khaled Salem Shayef – a Yemeni deminer working for Project Masam’s Team 30 who received training from Project Masam’s experts – said:

“Al-Houthi first started with explosive devices and placed mines with bombs under them. Now he has developed his operations and is using sea mines, explosive devices with cameras and remote controls.

“Today, we studied how to neutralise these items as we previously did not know how to deal with these [newly-developed] things. Now we have learned how to handle and neutralise every new item we discover.”

During the month of May 2021 alone, Project Masam’s teams located, neutralised and destroyed 135 anti-personnel mines, 7,665 anti-tank mines, 2,689 unexploded ordnance (UXO) and 13 improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
