Ousama Algosaibi, the Managing Director of the ‘Masam’ Landmine Clearance Project – Yemen, has thanked the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries following commendatory remarks made about the project’s humanitarian landmine clearance operations in Yemen.

A Saudi-funded multi-national humanitarian landmine clearance project working in liberated areas of Yemen, Project Masam announced the extension of its contract to rid Yemen of landmines for the seventh consecutive year in July 2024.

In a press release, Algosaibi stated that the final communiqué issued by the 45th session of the Supreme Council of the GCC, held in Kuwait Sunday (1 December) praising the humanitarian efforts of Project Masam, serves as an encouragement for all project staff to continue their mission of freeing Yemen from the dangers of mines and other explosive devices (including improvised explosive devices, IEDs) that threaten the lives of civilians.

The managing director added that the project, which is fully funded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, continues its work for the seventh consecutive year, following a clear strategy focused on addressing all threats in areas under the administration of Yemen’s internationally-recognised government.

In his statement, Algosaibi emphasised that, in addition to field operations, this strategy is centred on training and capacity-building programmes for Yemeni personnel, along with awareness campaigns and initiatives aimed at educating all segments of society about the dangers of mines and improvised explosive devices, and how to handle suspected cases.

The final statement of the Gulf summit included praise from the leaders of the GCC countries for Project Masam, and read:

“The Supreme Council praised the achievements of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid And Relief Centre (KSrelief), as well as the humanitarian support provided by the Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance from the GCC to the Republic of Yemen, and the humanitarian and development assistance provided by all GCC countries to Yemen. […] This also includes development programs, financial support for the Yemeni government’s budget, support for salaries, wages, operating expenses, and food security in Yemen, and the efforts of the Saudi Project for Landmine Clearance (Masam) to clear Yemeni lands of mines. Masam has removed 467,431 mines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices, clearing 61,232,240 square meters of land in Yemen that had been indiscriminately mined by Houthi militias, resulting in casualties among innocent children, women, and the elderly.”
