Project Masam’s deminers have destroyed 955 landmines, and unexploded ordnance in the Ghail Warka area of the Jabal Habashi district in Taiz, in central Yemen.
In alignment with the global mine action sector, Project Masam’s responsibilities include the clearance, removal or destruction of landmines stockpile and explosive remnants of war.
By destroying the explosive items, Project Masam ensures they can no longer function as designed – this effectively protects civilian populations and helps to eradicate these deadly weapons.
Aref al-Qahtani, the supervisor of Project Masam in Taiz governorate, said that the operation included the successful detonation and demolition of 746 miscellaneous rounds, 18 anti-tank mines, and six anti-personnel mines.
The bulk demolition operation also involved 27 improvised explosive devices (IEDs), 23 miscellaneous fuses, five Katyusha rockets, 91 assorted shells, and 39 explosive weapons, according to al-Qahtani.
He emphasised that the operation was conducted in compliance with international standards for the safe disposal of mines and unexploded ordnance. It was conducted in a remote location away from populated areas and agricultural lands in the Dofs region.
Al-Qahtani further noted that the disposal of these remnants of war is greatly appreciated by the local population, as such explosive items pose a significant threat to their lives. Removing these hazards allows civilians to move safely through their pastures, farms, and along roads.
The bulk demolition operation was conducted in the presence of Brigadier General Muhammad Al-Najjar, head of operations for the Taiz Axis, and Colonel Abdul Basit Al-Bahar, the official spokesperson for the Taiz Axis.
The Taiz Axis is the official body responsible for protecting Taiz governorate militarily.
The leadership of the Taiz Axis extended its sincere gratitude to Project Masam’s management and all those involved for their dedicated efforts in helping to rid Yemenis of the deadly threat posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance.
