Project Masam has carried out an intensive refresher training programme for its demining teams working in the Aden and West Coast sector.

The training programme includes all 16 demining teams operating in the governorates of Aden, Lajj, Al-Dhale, Hudaydah and Taiz.

These activities were designed to refresh and reinforce the skills of members of the demining teams returning from the Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr holidays.

The training programme featured realistic simulations of minefield clearance operations. It began with assessments of team leaders and field deminers, followed by thorough equipment checks, updates to safety protocols, and the calibration of detectors to ensure they meet operational standards in the target areas.

Training Officer and Technical Advisor Deon von Landsberg explained that the programme included a comprehensive evaluation of the teams’ ability to handle suspicious objects, starting from detection and reporting to the team leader, to implementing preventive measures to secure the area. The training also incorporated a simulated casualty evacuation exercise (CASEVAC) to ensure an effective and timely response in emergencies.

This initiative is part of continued efforts to improve occupational safety for demining teams, particularly in high-risk areas where the widespread and indiscriminate planting of mines has hindered the return of displaced populations and delayed reconstruction efforts.
