Muharram Zaid was tending to his sheep and goats when he came across an object that looked like a rock. Intrigued, he picked it up. It exploded.

“My right arm was amputated,” Muharram told Project Masam, as he took his goats and sheep to graze.

“On the day of the accident I had 50 sheep and after the accident I only had 10 sheep left.
He added: “I hope that the area will be completely liberated and be without mines.”

Whilst rock and land mines are a daily threat to many Yemenis, Project Masam’s humanitarian mine clearance work allows for the safe access to farm and grazing lands, effectively ensuring pastoralists can return to their fields and resume their work, safely.

Agriculture is the lifeblood of the Yemeni economy and grazing is a major source of income in Yemen’s rural areas.

Since the Saudi programme was implemented in mid-2018, Project Masam has located and destroyed 246,866 explosive devices, effectively clearing 22,518,643m2 of Yemeni land.
