Project Masam’s Managing Director has warned that landmine planting will continue during the holy month of Ramadan in Yemen.

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a month of fasting, worship, service, communal gathering, and spiritual discipline.

In an interview with Arabic daily newspaper Al Riyadh, Project Masam’s Ousama Algosaibi warned that the Houthi militia will continue to plant landmines in occupied territories during the holy month, leaving Yemenis at risk of landmine accidents.

“Despite the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan, mine-laying operations do not stop randomly at the entrances of villages or near mosques. Every year, the month of Ramadan is not without the recording of catastrophic incidents of landmine explosions, and the injury or death of Yemeni civilians as a result,” Algosaibi told Al Riyadh.

Algosaibi remembered how a civilian was killed and two others injured and on the first day of Ramadan last year, on 1 April 2022, when a Houthi landmine exploded under their car in the east of Al-Hazm, the capital of Al-Jawf Governorate.

With many Yemenis meeting up in public places to break fast and picnic during Ramadan, Algosaibi also warned civilians of the presence of landmines in these spaces.
