Mubarak’s story

مبارك 23

Young Mubarak and his friend were heading to the market to buy bread when a landmine detonated.

The explosion killed his friend on the spot, left Mubarak without a lower leg and shrapnel littering his body.

The young man told Project Masam: “I have become unable to practice many of the professions I used to do because they depended mainly on the movement of all my limbs; I was forced to look for another profession that suits my current situation.  Now, I work on a motorcycle.”

Mubarak insisted his ability to overcome his disability was due to the artificial limb he was given.

After finishing high school, Mubarak is preparing to complete his university studies while working on his motorcycle in order to cover his expenses and daily needs.

Mubarak has become a role model in his region – an inspirational young man who overcame personal challenges and struggles – and has achieved success.

The student said he is just an example of the thousands of Yemeni youth who have lost one or both limbs as a result of Houthi landmines, but have not let these tragedies and the pain get in the way of living their lives.
